Legislation to abolish the Electoral College was submitted Monday by a group of Democratic U.S. senators.
Republicans have often won the president via the Electoral College without winning the popular vote, which has led Democrats to criticize the system for decades.
Although some were concerned that Donald Trump, the president-elect, may carry on the tradition, he also managed to win the popular vote.
“The candidate with the most votes should win an election. “It’s that easy,” said Senator Brian Schatz, a Democrat from Hawaii.
“No voter’s vote should be given greater weight because of where they reside. The Electoral College lacks democracy and is out of date. Time to put a stop to it.
Without it, presidential candidates would only campaign in the most populous states, ignoring all others, according to proponents of the Electoral College.
