At the tender age of seventeen, Omar bin Omran disappeared from a community in northern Algeria. His loved ones refused to give up hope,
but after years of looking, they came to terms with the possibility that he was among the 100,000–200,000 casualties in the Algerian Civil War (1992–2002).
Still, the reality would be much stranger than anybody had anticipated. Bin Omran was found alive and detained approximately 200 meters from his family home on 12 May 2024.
See the footage of bin Omran’s discovery here: The adolescent bin Omran departed from his family’s residence in El Guedid in 1998, the last time anybody saw him. He would vanish off the face of the earth.
Although the majority of bin Omran’s relatives came to terms with the fact that he had died in the civil war,
his mother held out hope that a shepherd her son had supposedly been close to in the months leading up to the conflict had a role.
