On September 12, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered at least his third concussion in his NFL career during a home game against the Buffalo Bills, their AFC East rivals.
The injury happened when 26-year-old Tagovailoa’s helmet struck Bills safety Damar Hamlin when he was running for a first down.
Following his fall, Tagovailoa exhibited hand and arm movements suggestive of a concussion. He was inspected by team officials on the field before getting to his feet and limping off.
He was declared out of the game and did not come back to play the rest of it. Skylar Thompson, the backup, took his place. Following the game, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters,
“He was in good spirits.” McDaniel said, “My thought was concern” in response to Tagovailoa’s injuries. All I had on my mind was my boyfriend.
