Elon Musk wants to build a $20 billion tunnel that would take travelers 54 minutes to go from New York City to London.

The idea of a transatlantic tunnel connecting the two cities has been discussed for years; it would take 54 minutes to travel the almost 5,500 kilometers between them. It was once projected to cost an astounding $25 trillion.

To yet, no business has offered a workable strategy to realize this audacious concept. But according to Musk, it can be accomplished at a far lower price.

Musk emphasized on X (previously Twitter) that his tunnel construction and infrastructure company, The Boring Company, could complete the project 1,000 times more cheaply.

“The @boringcompany could do that for 1000x less money,” Musk said in response to a tweet about a possible $20 trillion tunnel that could carry people from New York to London in less than an hour.

Constructing a transatlantic tunnel Even massive infrastructure projects like the 23.5-kilometer, six-year-long Channel Tunnel would be dwarfed by this.
