The expert went on to say that the event is a “recipe for disaster” due to the unusually high Santa Ana winds.
The Santa Ana winds, which were said to have contributed significantly to the destructive fires, are a phenomenon that happens when “air from a region of high pressure over the dry,
Desert region of the southwestern U.S. flows westward towards low pressure located off the California coast,” according to the National Weather Service.
According to their website, this results in dry winds that move across Southern California’s mountain passes from east to west.
