Honoring the late actor and longtime TV star Bill Hayes

At the age of 98, Bill Hayes, a significant player in daytime television, died away. Having been in more than 2,100 episodes of Days of Our Lives since 1970,

Hayes was most renowned for his depiction of Doug Williams. One of the longest-running characters in the show’s history is the former con artist who is now a nightclub singer.

In 1925, Hayes was born in Harvey, Illinois. He began his career as a musician and singer before turning to acting, and in 1955 his song The Ballad of Davy Crockett achieved number one on the Billboard chart.

Hayes made his Broadway debut in Me and Juliet in 1953, and throughout the next ten years, he starred in many more plays.

In 1970, Hayes—a divorced father of five—joined the cast of Days of Our Lives in an attempt to find a more relatable part. This move would go on to define his career and win him millions of fans.
