Shortly after it was unveiled, the Satanic Temple in Concord demolished a statue of the pagan god Baphomet that was placed outside the New Hampshire State House.
The monument was knocked down sometime between Sunday morning and Monday afternoon, according to state representative Ellen Read, a Democrat who welcomed the installation.
The statue’s head and torso are shown detached from the base in photographs taken when it was on exhibit next to a nativity scene.
They also smashed a neighboring plaque that listed the principles of the Satanic Temple. No suspects have been named as of yet, and Concord police are still looking into the event.
Rep. Read, who represents Newmarket, worked with the Satanic Temple in Salem, Massachusetts, to get the monument put up.
Read claims that rather than advancing a particular religious cause, the monument was meant to praise Isaac Newton and “celebrate science and the quest of knowledge.”
