Paul Reubens, star of “Pee-wee Herman,” comes out as homosexual in a documentary after his away.

After years of conjecture on the star’s sexual orientation, the late Paul Reubens, also known as Pee-wee Herman, is finally identifying himself.

In the new two-part documentary series “Pee-wee as Himself,” which debuted Thursday night at the Sundance Film Festival in Salt Lake City,

Reubens discloses that he was homosexual. Later this year, HBO and Max are scheduled to broadcast it. “I was as out as you could be, and then I went back in the closet,”

Reubens said in the documentary. “My career would have absolutely suffered if I was openly gay, so I went to great lengths for many, many years to keep it a secret.”

The documentary’s director, Matt Wolf, interviewed him for 40 hours, during which Reubens spoke about his connection with Guy, a painter he shared a home with in Los Angeles in the 1970s.

The actor, who prioritized his career above his personal life, discloses that Reubens paid Guy a visit just before his death from AIDS, years after their breakup
