The Parliament of South Korea votes to remove President Yoon Suk Yeol from office due to his imposition of martial law.

South Korea’s SEOUL — As joyous crowds roared to celebrate another defiant moment in the nation’s resilient democracy, South Korea’s parliament impeached.

President Yoon Suk Yeol on Saturday for his stunning and brief martial law decree. This action ended days of political paralysis but sparked a heated debate over Yoon’s future.

The proposal was approved by the National Assembly 204-85. Later on Saturday, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, the nation’s second-ranking official,

Assumed presidential duties when Yoon’s powers and responsibilities were suspended. The Constitutional Court has 180 days to decide whether to remove.

Yoon from office or give him back his authority. A nationwide election must be called within 60 days to choose his successor if he is removed from office.

Following the governing party MPs’ boycott of the first floor vote on Yoon’s impeachment last Saturday, this was the second National Assembly vote on the matter.
