The United States is set to experience a polar vortex, so if you reside here, be ready. What what is a polar vortex, you ask?
It is essentially “a large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding both of the Earth’s poles,” according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
It is usually close to the poles, but in the winter it becomes stronger. It is often contained inside the area by the “vortex.”
But “the polar vortex will often expand during winter in the northern hemisphere, sending cold air southward with the jet stream,” the NWS said.
“This happens quite frequently in the winter and is frequently linked to significant Arctic air outbreaks in the United States.”
According to the FOX Forecast Center, at least 20 states are expected to have negative temperatures next week,
