Citing Canadian authorities’ efforts to fortify the border, President Donald Trump said Monday that planned U.S. tariffs on Canadian products have been put on hold for 30 days.
The declaration came after Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke over the phone in the afternoon. Beginning this week, Trump has threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian imports.
In a statement, Trudeau said that Canada is investing $1.3 billion in “reinforcing the border.” In addition to designating drug cartels as terrorists,
Trudeau said that the nation is hiring a “Fentanyl Czar” and that some 10,000 “frontline personnel are and will be” working on border security.
He went on to say that Canada will invest $200 million in a new intelligence program that would target fentanyl and organized crime. Trump expressed his satisfaction.
With the agreement on his own social media network, Truth Social, writing, “As President, it is my responsibility to ensure the safety of ALL Americans, and I am doing just that.”
