In a Television Series – Drama award, the 76-year-old star of “Matlock” tore up a piece of paper that seemed to contain her acceptance speech.
Sawai’s name was mentioned, and Bates clapped. Then, she smashed the paper while staring directly at the camera.
Emma D’Arcy (“House of the Dragon”), Keira Knightley (“Black Doves”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”), and Maya Erskine (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) were also in the category that Sawai, 32, won.
