Authorities and the victim’s social media account report that a veteran aerobatic pilot and airshow performer died in a plane crash at Virginia’s Langley Air Force Base.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) told PEOPLE via email that the incident happened on Thursday, April 24.
According to early information, the FAA reported that at approximately 11:50 a.m. local time, an MX Aircraft MXS crashed when the pilot was trying to land at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.
The agency stated that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will be in charge of the crash investigation and that only the pilot was on board the aircraft at the time.
According to an NTSB statement obtained by PEOPLE, the plane crashed “under unknown circumstances” as it approached Langley Air Force Base, citing preliminary information.
Rob Holland Aerosports verified Holland as the pilot in a Facebook comment, however the FAA and NTSB did not name the victim.
