An asteroid is hurtling toward Earth and may strike us in 2032. When it does, most of us will unconsciously exhale in relief and mumble the word “finally.”
What can we do in the face of a danger comparable to Armageddon, however, for those who aren’t yet ready to accept the sweet embrace of death?
Of course, that’s exactly what the imaginary oil drillers accomplished. The ever-loving stuff should be nuked. At least that’s what astronomer Dr. David Whitehouse suggests.
Asteroid 2024 YR4 will need to develop missile evasion skills if it intends to strike us in less than a decade.
The present size of the asteroid is around 100 m by 40 m, or about the size of a soccer field. Its projected impact risk is one in 67, which is a little too high for my taste.
Even worse, by 2028, the asteroid will be out of sight, giving us a little window of time to attempt to determine what to do in the event that its track brings it close to us.
