After being extinct about 10,000 years ago, the dire wolf is once again roaming the planet and even howling, immortalized in Game of Thrones and on the crest of House Stark.
Colossal Biosciences, a genetic engineering business, revealed today that it had successfully revived the long-extinct dog,
Or at least a very near facsimile of it. According to research conducted by Colossal, also known as the De-Extinction Company,
The procedure was carried out using DNA taken from two fossils and 20 modifications to the genetic code of a gray wolf, the species’ closest living cousin.
Based on its latest findings that the original species had fur that was the color of snow, Colossal claims to have whelped three dire wolves and used CRISPR technology.
To choose fluffy white fur for their coats. (An earlier research that was published in 2021 in Nature showed evidence that dire wolves and gray wolves were not closely related.)
