A senior at North Stokes High was murdered in a collision on Saturday night while traveling to prom.

UPDATE: STOKES COUNTY, N.C. The funeral service for William James Turner has been set for Friday, April 18 at 2:00 PM at the Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel in Sandy Ridge.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reports that a 17-year-old was died in a car accident in Stokes County on Saturday.

Troopers said that at around 6:09 p.m. on Saturday, they were called to a collision on NC 8 close to Sawmill Road.

According to an investigation, a 2002 Ford Taurus “drove off the right side of the road, overcorrected, crossed left of center leaving the roadway to the left” while it was heading north on NC 8.

The State Highway Patrol said the vehicle struck two trees after passing through a yard and over a driveway. William James Turner, a 17-year-old Madison resident, was the driver and was declared dead at the site.

According to the Highway Patrol, speed played a role in the collision.
