Following the death of a veteran Chicago fire captain in a garage fire, authorities have placed a person of interest under arrest.

Chicago A person of interest is being held in relation to the fire, and a Chicago fire captain lost his life Wednesday morning while fighting a fire inside a garage in the city’s Austin area.

Injuries sustained while battling a fire at 1239 N. Pine Ave. claimed the life of 54-year-old Capt. David Meyer.

When the collapse happened, firefighters were starting salvage and overhaul efforts after putting out the fire, according to Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt.

After being transported to Stroger Hospital, Meyer was declared deceased.
