After a dump truck allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a group of utility workers, four people were killed and three injured.

Authorities in North Carolina say a man operating a municipal dump truck hit six utility workers, four of whom were declared dead at the scene, after he reportedly violated a stop sign. The guy has been prosecuted.

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety (NCDPS) tells PEOPLE that 66-year-old Michael Ray Vernon was operating a city-owned dump truck near Carroll Street at Church Street.

In Eden on Thursday, April 24, at approximately 1:30 p.m. local time, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, which is conducting the crash investigation.

According to authorities, Vernon is suspected of driving through an intersection and past a stop sign before his vehicle struck six workers doing power line.

Four employees perished at the scene: Douglas Garland Sides, 72; Madison Carter, 32; William Evans, 35; and Matthew Lockwood, 30. The 31-year-old guy in the bucket truck was transported.
