The FBI is alerting homeowners to a new and frightening fraud that may target them with “title pirates.” Following the discovery of a string of attempted property thefts and stolen land frauds.
The FBI’s Boston office opened an investigation and is now alerting real estate agents and homeowners to the “title thefts” occurring throughout the United States.
According to CBS announcement, the announcement follows I-Team investigations that found numerous victims of land theft, where fraudsters used fake driver’s licenses to pose as landowners.
One such victim, Halla Shami Jakari, told WBZ-TV’s I-Team that she never sold her undeveloped land in Concord and was surprised to see that not only was it gone, but that a buyer had also bought it and begun construction.
Halla and her husband Omar made the grim discovery that fraudsters had stolen the plot to sell on. Omar added: “They stole our dream.”
