‘World’s Loneliest Dolphin’ Dies After Years in Captivity at Abandoned Marine Park

Honey, a bottlenose dolphin once dubbed the “world’s loneliest dolphin,” passed away on March 29, 2020, after spending two years alone in a small tank at the now-defunct Marine Park Aquarium in Choshi, Japan.

Her death was confirmed by the Dolphin Project, a U.S.-based nonprofit focused on the welfare of marine mammals.

Captured during the Taiji dolphin drives in 2005, Honey spent her entire life in captivity.

Her story gained international attention in 2018 after the aquarium closed, leaving Honey and dozens of other animals, including 46 penguins, in the facility under minimal care.

While a staff member continued to feed the animals, reports highlighted inadequate living conditions, prompting global concern.
