A teen tragically died after participating in a new contact sport, prompting a neuroscientist to make an urgent warning.
Ryan Satterthwaite, a 19-year-old man from New Zealand, passed away following serious injuries he sustained during a “run it straight” tackle game. This unofficial contact sport has gone viral on social media but is currently receiving a lot of criticism for its risks, according to Stuff.
Ryan and his buddies were playing an unplanned match based on the viral sport in Palmerston North on Sunday afternoon when the deadly incident happened.
He was taken to the hospital immediately, but on Monday night, he unfortunately died.
Inspector Ross Grantham, the commander of Manawatu, said that the teen’s death was connected to the contentious trend.
“This tragic outcome does highlight the inherent safety concerns with such an activity, even though it was an unplanned game among friends,” he said. “Anyone considering participating in a game or event like this should think about the serious safety and injury risks.”
