Abramović informed the curator at the Guggenheim that she was originally drawn to the “sculptural element” of Acconci’s performance as well as the “taboo element,” according to NY Arts.
In an interview with New York Magazine, she later admitted: “It’s really not simple, I tell you! Having orgasms in public and getting stimulated by the people steps above me! Never in my life have I focused so intently.
“The only issue I had with this piece was that there was no public gaze—just music. It seemed like a huge party up there, though, and I heard that everyone had a blast! I had nine orgasms in the end.
I was so tired that it was awful for the next portion! Abramović revealed in an interview with Art Monthly that Seven Easy Pieces was inspired by anger.
“As you are aware, performance was nobody’s domain for all these years. However, everyone was now taking away from the show. She stated, “You name it, even Lady Gaga, and without really referring to the original material.”
She obtained licenses and paid money to re-stage foundational works by renowned artists in a way that was both ethical and legal in order to reclaim that space and remind viewers of the origins of performance art.
