“The show is very outdated now, it’s problematic.” Not only have fans seen the lack of diversity throughout the years, but some of the show’s creators have also recognized it.
Adam Goldberg, who portrayed Chandler’s eccentric roommate Eddie for a short time, told The Independent that he believed the show’s lack of diversity was “insane.” Goldberg said, “I’ve heard.
Black people speak about this and it’s like, you never expected to see yourself, so when you didn’t, it was not a surprise, and you ended up identifying to characters, irrespective of their race.”
One of the show’s creators, Marta Kauffman, has spoken about how her viewpoint has changed over time. The Los Angeles Times quoted her as saying, “I’ve learned a lot in the last 20 years.”
She also expressed sorrow, stating: “It’s difficult to admit and accept blame. Looking at oneself in the mirror hurts. I feel ashamed that I was ignorant twenty-five years ago.
Since then, Kauffman has worked to promote more inclusion, reflecting on the program. She promised to donate $4 million to the African and African American studies department at Brandeis.
