Friends Actress Aisha Tyler Considers Iconic Sitcom’s Lack of Diversity

She went on: “It wasn’t like it was merely something that people saw later and thought, ‘Wait a minute.’”

No, there was a lot of discussion at the time about how lacking in diversity the program was for a show set in the center of Manhattan.

“But we didn’t have social media back then, so it wasn’t the large-scale conversation that it became later.” Tyler noted the dearth of extensive conversations around representation at the time.

She also brought attention to the long-standing prejudices in the entertainment sector, saying, “I mean, that’s just been the attitude in Hollywood for a long time.”

Tyler commended David Schwimmer for his attempts to promote more diversity in the program during its first run, despite these obstacles.
