A developing hamlet located around 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Salt Lake City, Love entered politics in 2003. Later on, she was elected mayor of the city.

In a district that includes a number of Salt Lake City suburbs, Love lost a close race for the House in 2012 against Democratic incumbent former Representative Jim Matheson.

Two years later, she ran again and won by around 7,500 votes against Doug Owens, who was running for the first time.

During her campaigning, Love didn’t highlight her race, but upon her triumph in 2014, she recognized the importance of her election.

She said that her victory disproved the notion held by some that a Black, Republican, Mormon woman couldn’t win a seat in the legislature in Utah, which is mostly white.
