Both of Stubblefield’s parents had Ph.D.s in special education and had devoted their professional lives to working closely with individuals with impairments, according to a 2015 Times story.
When Stubblefield volunteered to assist Derrick with his communication abilities, it seemed that she was carrying on her parents’ legacy.
Soon after receiving this help, Derrick enrolled in a university course. Being married at the time, Stubblefield has said that she and Derrick had a sexual connection that was consensual.
Daisy Johnson, Derrick’s mother, has a completely different viewpoint, however. She claims that her son was unable to have emotional or physical contact.
The documentary, which follows Stubblefield and Derrick’s friendship and the circumstances up to a criminal prosecution and, eventually, a felony conviction, centers on this disagreement.
