More proof of the circumstances convicts face at El Salvador’s Centre for the Confinement of Terrorism (CECOT) has come from footage taken inside the facility.
Since its inception, CECOT has been a contentious institution, earning the moniker “world’s worst prison” and being referred to as a “black hole of human rights” due to its “inhumane” circumstances.
Inmates reside in cells that can accommodate up to 100 people but only have 80 beds—metal frames without mattresses—and have their heads shaved every five days.
They eat with their hands, have nothing to do except exercise under supervision for thirty minutes each day, and have minimal opportunity of escaping from prison.
The inmates include those who were deported from the United States by the Trump administration, which placed them in CECOT in violation of court rulings that said he was not authorized to do so.
More insight into the experience of inmates at CECOT has been provided via a video that was uploaded from within the facility.
