Ohana Signifies That No One Is Left Behind
We were just reminded by Tia Carrere of the true meaning of “ohana.”
The Wayne’s World and Lilo & Stitch actress talked candidly about her 19-year-old son Jude coming out as transgender in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE. And to be honest, her sincere encouragement makes us feel really happy.
Jude Discovers Contentment Outside of the Public Eye
Jude, whom she shares with her ex-husband Simon Wakelin, usually avoids the bright lights of Hollywood, Carrere disclosed. However, he recently walked the red carpet at the Lilo & Stitch premiere. Carrere was filming another project in the Philippines, so she was sadly unable to attend the big night. (What a hectic schedule!)
Jude would rather live a more subdued existence, even though Carrere’s place is evident on film. Even though Hollywood isn’t his scene, he’s undoubtedly making an impact in his own right. Jude thrives in painting and interacting with animals rather than performing or singing. Carrere said he has a strong creative side and is excellent with animals. “He’s got such a talent with animals, but I don’t know what career he’ll choose,” Carrere told PEOPLE with pride.
Encouragement of Jude’s True Self
Jude’s comfort and happiness are Carrere’s top priorities. She revealed, “He’s really happy and very clear about who he is.” It means the world to Carrere to watch her son embrace who he is and live true to himself.
Carrere commended Jude’s thoughtfulness as well. She characterized him as his friend group’s unofficial therapist. Carrere chuckled and said, “He’s always the designated driver, always taking care of everyone else.” Jude is the only one. He is inherently compassionate.
