An Award-Winning Career on Screen and Stage
Born on June 16, 1953, in Indonesia, Mahaffey spent her early years there before moving to Nigeria, then England, and eventually the U.S. She graduated from the University of Texas in 1975 and quickly launched a successful acting career in New York City.
She appeared on Broadway six times between 1976 and 1984, with notable roles in Dracula opposite Raul Julia and Play Memory, directed by Harold Prince. She earned two Obie Awards for her Off-Broadway performances in Top Girls and Talking Heads.
On television, Mahaffey rose to prominence in the NBC soap opera The Doctors as Ashley Bennett from 1979–1981, earning a Daytime Emmy nomination. Her breakout role came with CBS’ Northern Exposure, where her portrayal of Eve, a quirky hypochondriac, won her a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 1992. She was the only cast member from the show to win an Emmy.
Roles like Eve, a character with health anxieties, brought attention to how chronic conditions and mental wellness are portrayed in media.
