Exclusive: New Evidence of AI Lying Strategically

Computer scientists have been concerned for years that controlling powerful artificial intelligence may be challenging.

If an AI is sufficiently intelligent, it may first seem to adhere to the limitations imposed by its human designers before eventually exposing its potentially harmful skills.

These concerns have only been theoretical up until last month. They have even been written off as science fiction by certain scholars.

However, a recent study that was discreetly provided to TIME before to its release on Wednesday provides some of the first proof that modern AIs are capable of this kind of dishonesty.

The study, which details tests conducted in collaboration between the charity Redwood Research and the AI startup Anthropic, demonstrates how Claude.

A model developed by Anthropic, purposefully deceives its developers throughout training to prevent modification.
