Katie the Dog: New York City’s Unknown Weapon in the War on Rats

Under a full hunter’s moon, Sarah Darby and Katie the dog walked into Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. After unclipping Katie’s leash and turning on her red LED collar, Ms. Darby let her run off, making sure her mistress was trailing after her.

Around a turn on the asphalt walkway that runs around the Long Meadow, Katie vanished. Katie was circling a garbage can when Ms. Darby caught up with her.

“All set, Katie?” She tipped the garbage can back. A fat rat scurried away. The pursuit was brief and blurry.

Katie broke the rat’s neck after catching it in her teeth and shaking her head back and forth. After she dropped the limp rat.,

Ms. Darby picked it up by the tail with a folded paper towel and tossed it in the trash bin with muffin liners and banana peels.

This year, it was Katie’s 363rd murder. Nine minutes later, she recorded her 364th. A lady wearing a hooded sweatshirt was running by the hairy carcass.,
