I underwent an MRI recently because I have a displaced disc in my jaw. When I received a $8,500 bill from the hospital, I was taken aback since my insurance company had promised to cover 80% of the $8,000 charge.
I contacted right away, and after being sent from one billing department to another (the hospital obviously had many), I eventually spoke.
With someone who informed me that the charge wasn’t in their system and that I should consider it an error. I couldn’t help but think of those who don’t call, ask questions, or demand answers,
As well as others who still can’t afford to pay 20% of a multi-thousand dollar bill, even though I was clearly happy to not have to pay close to $10,000 for a scan.
I thus asked the BuzzFeed Community to describe an instance in which they had insurance but still got an absurd medical cost.
