Approximately 80% of Puerto Rico is experiencing a power outage on New Year’s Eve. According to Josué Colón, head of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority,

A malfunctioning power line created a “cascade effect” of many failing power plants, leaving over 1.3 million people without electricity in Puerto Rico.

The business said that after an island-wide outage that started at 5:30 a.m., “LUMA has activated its Emergency Operations Centre and is currently working.

“LUMA crews responded right away and have started working to get customers’ power back as soon as possible in a safe manner,” LUMA said.
