Imane Khelif, a boxer from Algeria, has won the Olympic gold medal despite being embroiled in a gender-based scandal during the Paris Games.
In the women’s welterweight final, Khelif beat Yang Liu of China by a unanimous decision to claim the gold medal.
The boxer was under severe scrutiny when a former opponent withdrew from the bout 46 seconds in, saying she was worried about her health because of Khelif’s powerful blows.
Gaining Olympic gold would be the “best response” to her detractors, according to the 25-year-old.
Fearing that Khelif would have an unfair testosterone advantage, others have claimed that he should not have been allowed to participate.
