A fair-catch kick: what is it? Cameron Dicker of the Chargers converts for the first time since 1976.

Corrections/clarifications: Dicker’s kick distance was incorrectly mentioned in an earlier version of this article.

The Los Angeles Chargers recently performed a fair catch kick, which hasn’t been done in an NFL game since 1976. However, what exactly is a fair-catch kick?

If a player makes a fair catch, the NFL allows his team to try a kick from the position instead of starting the following drive.

The kick is worth three points, which is equal to a field goal, if it passes through the goalposts on the scoring end of the field. The ball does not need to be snapped during a fair-catch kick,

And the kicker may start sprinting further before kicking the ball. It’s basically the same as a kickoff attempt, only instead of using a tee, you use a holder.

After the Denver Broncos’ punt coverage unit was called for fair catch interference at the conclusion of the first half of Thursday night’s game, Cameron Dicker tried the 57-yard fair-catch kick.
