A man who had the first successful face and double hand transplant in history spoke about a vehicle accident that changed his life.

 

“My car veered off the side of the road, hit a curb, flipped a couple of times, and then caught on fire,” Joe remarked in reference to the collision.

“My mod caused a flame after scraping the curb, which produced a spark. The oil pan then split in the impact.

“I was burned to 80%. My eyes were scorched, so they had to stitch them after amputating my fingers to the second knuckle. It like peering through a chain-link fence.

He went on to say that his recuperation was “extremely challenging” and that he was unable to move his fingers for the first two weeks, requiring medical workers to manipulate them in order to activate his muscle memory.

He said that while he “lost a lot of fake friends” as a result of the disaster, he also discovered who he could really rely on, noting that “you realise who your real friends are and you appreciate them more.”
