According to a study published in the medical journal Anaesthesiology, redheads’ pain threshold is caused by a mutation in their hair gene that may be partly inhibiting a sensory receptor.
Redheads can withstand up to 25% more pain than persons with other hair colours, according to a McGill University research. Another study from Oslo University said that redheads experience less pain when pierced by a pin.
Although red hair has been associated with variations in how pain is processed, scientists have not been able to identify the underlying causes.
However, studies have hypothesised that people with auburn hair may also feel pleasure in various ways, so it’s not only redheads who tend to appreciate it.
According to a University of Hamburg research, women with red hair had more active sex lives and the highest orgasm rate of any hair color—41 percent.
