Following 5,600 complaints, British citizens who use open flames and wood-burning stoves risk £1,000 penalties.

British citizens are being cautioned that using wood-burning stoves illegally, which has grown in popularity, might result in hefty penalties.

Smoke pollution has been connected to respiratory illnesses and cancer, and it is estimated that 10% of houses in the UK now burn wood over open fires.

Although councils have received over 5,600 complaints, only four places—Bolsover, Bristol, Horsham, and Wakefield—have enforced the fines. Individuals in smoke control zones face.

Fines of up to £1,000 for using illicit fuel and up to £300 for smoking chimneys. This is true even though some households save up to £2,000 on energy bills by using wood burners.

No prosecutions were found in the freedom of information requests made by the Mums for Lungs organisation. The organisation stated:

“The Government needs to ensure councils protect children from toxic pollution, not just ask them to discuss the risks.”
