On November 28, 2023, some nine months after it was announced that he had entered hospice care, Carter attended the public memorial ceremony for his late wife. He remained silent at the memorial, frail and in a wheelchair.
Rather, his daughter Amy read a letter that Carter had written to Rosalynn some 75 years before, when he was overseas serving in the Navy, in his place.
“My darling, every time I have ever been away from you, I have been thrilled when I returned to discover just how wonderful you are,” the letter began.
“I try to persuade myself that you are not, and could not be, as lovely and lovely as I recall when I’m gone. However, I fall in love with you anew every time I see you.”
