A group of high-ranking officials met with Madeleine’s dad in London in 2023, according to BBC Panorama. They went all the way from Lisbon.
Their treatment of the family and the way investigators handled the case were allegedly matters of great regret. No statement has been made by the McCanns about the apology.
“It shows that, in Portugal, there is development in the McCann case,” says Hans Christian Wolters, one of the German prosecutors involved in the probe, calling the apology “a good sign.”

In 2022, the inquiry formally listed German prisoner Christian B as a suspect. Unrelated s**ual offenses allegedly committed in Portugal between 2000 and 2017 are pending his prosecution in Germany at this time.
