It all started when a little youngster accidentally contacted a military command in Colorado in the hopes of speaking with Father Christmas.
The toddler contacted a misprinted phone number after seeing an advertising for a department shop in the local newspaper. That Christmas Eve, Air Force Commander Harry Shoup,
Who just so happened to be answering the phones, realized the confusion right away and reassured the youngster that he was, in fact, Santa Claus. Commander Shoup chose to designate.
A duty officer to continue taking the phone as additional calls from thrilled kids came in that evening, beginning a sweet custom that NORAD eventually embraced when it was founded in 1958.
