A Russian city 70 miles inside the country, in the Bryansk region, after approving Ukraine’s use of long-range missile systems against targets in Russia.
This move has long been opposed by U.S. officials worried about escalation and has been cited by Russian President Vladimir Putin as a catalyst for war between Washington and Moscow.
CNN reports that five of the ATACMS supersonic missiles were shot down by Russian air defenses, while the sixth missile was damaged.
Damaged missile fragments fell close to a military installation, starting a fire but not killing anyone or inflicting any damage.
The attempted missile strikes were verified by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which also hinted that these and other long-range missile strikes would be seen as American military actions.
