“The People’s Patrol”: After a woman is burned alive, guardian angels keep watch over subways

Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, a 33-year-old Guatemalan illegal immigrant, is charged with first- and second-degree murder for allegedly killing the unnamed lady by burning her to death.

If convicted, he faces a life sentence without the possibility of release. Sliwa lamented that the victim had not received a possibly life-saving intervention.

In a different video, Sliwa said that while NYPD police began policing subway carriages in 1979, they are now only able to monitor the platforms and turnstiles due to a lack of staff,

Creating a security gap. He went on to say that homeless people were often more susceptible to hallucinations due to dehydration. He said, “We are the people’s patrol.” As we did in 1979,

Sliwa said, “We’re going to have to increase our numbers, increase the training, and increase our presence.” Sliwa also attacked the criminal justice system in the city.

“Notice that there are no crisis intervention [or mental health] workers—they have all these fancy names — I’ve never seen them,” he said. “And, I might add, we spent millions of dollars.”
