With the exception of Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin, where they were categorised as threatened.

In 1940, Congress passed the Bald Eagle Protection Act, which was subsequently extended to include golden eagles, in an effort to safeguard bald eagles.

Conservation and recovery efforts were also prompted by its subsequent inclusion on the endangered species list, according to the Wildlife Service.

The bald eagle has sufficiently recovered by 1998 to be classified as threatened. Bald eagles were taken off the list entirely in 2007 when authorities claimed that there were over 9,000 nesting pairs in the contiguous states.

There are now around 316,700 bald eagles in the lower 48 states, including 71,467 breeding pairs, according to estimates from 2018 and 2019.

According to the Wildlife Service, “the bald eagle is an Endangered Species Act success story.” Federal legislation continues to protect bald eagles, making it unlawful to kill, trade, or injure them.
