Additionally, they are in danger from avian flu, which scientists have discovered is killing them at a “alarming rate.”
According to a well-known tradition, Benjamin Franklin argued that the turkey, not the bald eagle, should be designated as the national bird. The Franklin Institute says this is not the complete story.
According to the institution, Franklin never suggested making the turkey the national bird, despite praising it and criticising the eagle in a letter to his daughter.
Personally, I wish the Bald Eagle had not been selected to represent our nation. He is a bird with a poor moral code. According to Harvard University’s Declaration Resources Project,
He said in the letter, “Because in reality the turkey is in comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America.”
In light of the circumstances, the letter is essentially a jest in which Franklin criticised the seal of the Society of the Cincinnati, which similarly chose an eagle as a replacement for the Great Seal.
