This is the Black Moon, which will be the second new moon of December. There are really two definitions, so it really depends on which one you choose.
The second new moon in a single calendar month or the third new moon in a four-new-moon season are both considered Black Moons.
We’ll continue using the first definition for the time being since it is the one that is more often used. It’s not really dark, however, and you probably won’t get a clear view of it either.
Although it is scheduled for December 30 at 4.26 p.m. CST (10.26 p.m. UTC) in the US, it is one day later for those of us in Europe.
Although they are uncommon, black moons may occur; the most recent one occurred on May 19, 2023.
Because the side that the Sun illuminates is facing away from Earth, if you gaze up at the sky on that day, you probably won’t see anything except stars.
