When asked about space life, Williams previously told students at Scotland’s University of Strathclyde: “You have to work out to maintain your bone density and muscle mass, so that’s part of the day.”
The ability to make a daily phone call or participate in a video conference on weekends is incredibly pleasant, yet you also leave a family behind, she noted. Those are the most challenging aspects of being gone for so long.
Both Williams (58 years old) of Needham, Massachusetts, and Wilmore (61 years old) of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, have left families behind.
Williams is a former Navy captain, while Wilmore is from Tennessee. Williams is a married man who keeps dogs, while Wilmore is a married man with two kids.
While up there, the couple is doing a number of scientific experiments, one of which involves scanning their veins with an ultrasound equipment to collect data on the effects of space on the human body.
