Series that are consistently amusing and creative these days, and “Shadows” was notable for being so unremarkable: It wasn’t the biggest comedy on the air,
But it never had a bad episode. The record of consistency would have thrilled its eternal vampire characters, who, as the conclusion demonstrated,
Never change or develop no matter how many years go by. It’s not easy to maintain quality for so many episodes. For them, it would be just too much effort.
It was brave and appropriate that the final episode proceeded exactly as the previous sixty did: the vampires did something silly, something dull, and even something a little sweet.
The writers appeared to be well aware of the pressure to end on a high note, as most big finale episodes try. It was hilarious, of course. And, like all endings, a touch depressing.
