It was constructed of wood and iron. It was created by Jacob Starr, a teenage immigrant metalworker, according to the official Times Square website.
Shortly before 6 p.m. on December 31, the Times Square Ball Drop celebration will begin, and the New Year’s Eve Ball will be hoisted atop the pole.
