The Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported that when Pope Francis was summoned to the Vatican on Monday, April 21, his physician discovered him motionless but with his eyes open and breathing normally.
In the months preceding his death at the age of 88, Pope Francis—whose true name was Jorge Mario Bergoglio—had been in poor health.
Back in February, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, the Holy Father, was taken to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after contracting a respiratory infection.
Chronic bronchitis that progressed to pneumonia in both lungs, and minor renal failure. His death was announced earlier this week by the Vatican.
Francis’s five-week hospital stay was coordinated by Dr. Sergio Alfieri, who also managed the pope’s care after he returned to the Vatican on March 23 for two months of repose to allow for a thorough recovery.
